New Delhi, 19th April. In the ongoing legal battle involving Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), a contentious issue has emerged surrounding Kejriwal’s access to insulin while in Tihar Jail. The latest developments have intensified the clash between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and the ED, with accusations flying about Kejriwal’s dietary choices and the denial of essential medical treatment.
Controversy over Insulin Supply: During a court hearing today, Kejriwal raised concerns over the denial of insulin, a life-saving drug for his Type 2 diabetes, during his detention in Tihar Jail. Kejriwal’s legal team argued vehemently against the ED’s claims that he deliberately consumed foods high in sugar to manipulate his health condition for obtaining medical bail.
Kejriwal’s Defense: In his defense, Kejriwal asserted that his dietary intake adhered to a prescribed diet chart provided by his doctor prior to his arrest. His legal representatives emphasized that Kejriwal had been prescribed 50 units of insulin daily since 2012 and had been deprived of this medication for the past 29 days.
Rebuttal Against ED’s Allegations: Kejriwal’s legal team offered a detailed rebuttal to the ED’s allegations, presenting evidence of his dietary compliance and challenging the ED’s assertions regarding his consumption of sugary foods. They clarified that Kejriwal used Sugar Free, an artificial sweetener, in his tea instead of white sugar, as alleged by the ED.
Contention Over Diet: The ED countered by highlighting discrepancies between Kejriwal’s actual diet and the prescribed regimen, pointing out instances where he allegedly consumed prohibited foods like mangoes and aloo-puri. However, Kejriwal’s legal team argued that such deviations were minimal and did not significantly impact his health.
Legal Proceedings and Future Course: The court, after hearing arguments from both sides, reserved its verdict for Monday, prompting concerns from Kejriwal about the urgency of his medical condition. Kejriwal’s arrest by the ED on March 21 in connection with an alleged liquor policy scam has already sparked controversy, with the AAP labeling it as political vendetta.
Awaiting Supreme Court’s Decision: Kejriwal, meanwhile, continues to challenge his arrest in the Supreme Court, which is scheduled to reconvene on April 29. Despite his pleas for an early hearing, the apex court has deferred the matter, prolonging Kejriwal’s legal battle against the ED’s allegations.
Final Verdict Awaited: As the legal proceedings unfold, the verdict on Kejriwal’s insulin request and the broader implications of his detention remain uncertain. The case not only raises questions about the rights of detainees to adequate medical care but also underscores the contentious intersection of politics and law enforcement in India’s capital.
The outcome of Monday’s verdict holds significant implications for Kejriwal’s health and the ongoing legal confrontation between him and the ED, further intensifying the political drama surrounding the AAP leader’s arrest and subsequent legal battles.
