New Delhi, 18th May.
Bibhav Kumar, an aide to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, has been apprehended by the Delhi Police in connection with the assault case filed against him by Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal. The arrest follows Maliwal’s allegations that Kumar, the chief minister’s secretary, assaulted her during her visit to Kejriwal’s residence on Monday.

Kumar was taken into custody from the chief minister’s residence by a Delhi Police team around noon, as confirmed by a senior police officer. He has been escorted to the police station for interrogation regarding the incident.

Despite efforts by Kumar’s legal counsel to cooperate with authorities, they have yet to receive any official communication from the police. “We’ve not received any information from the police yet. We’ve sent them an e-mail that we will cooperate in the investigation,” stated Kumar’s lawyer, Karan Sharma, to news agency ANI.

The incident has ignited a political uproar, with the BJP slamming Kejriwal for his perceived silence on the matter. Gaurav Bhatia, a spokesperson for the BJP, went as far as labeling Kejriwal as the “main criminal” due to his alleged inaction during the assault. Additionally, a video purportedly showing the altercation at the Delhi Chief Minister’s house between the staff and AAP Rajya Sabha MP is circulating on social media.

In her FIR, Maliwal detailed the alleged assault, accusing Kumar of striking her in the chest, stomach, and pelvic area with his legs.

She said, “I felt absolutely shocked and was screaming for help over and over again. In order to protect myself, I pushed him away with my legs. At that time, he pounced on me, brutally dragged and deliberately pulled my shirt up,” the FIR reads. “Bibhav Kumar did not relent and attacked me by kicking me in my chest, stomach and pelvis area with his legs.”
