Ranchi, 26th July. Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Anurag Gupta has been appointed as the additional Director General of Police (DGP) of Jharkhand, according to a government notification issued on Friday.
Gupta, a 1990-batch IPS officer currently serving as Director General of the Crime Investigation Department and additional charge of the Anti-Corruption Bureau in Jharkhand, will assume the role of state police chief until further notice. He replaces Ajay Kumar Singh, a 1989-batch IPS officer who was appointed as DGP in February 2023 following the retirement of his predecessor, Neeraj Sinha.
Singh, who held the position of DGP since February 2023, has been reassigned as Managing Director of the Jharkhand Police Housing Corporation Ltd. His tenure as DGP had resolved a previous dispute concerning the appointment process, which was under scrutiny by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court had intervened in January 2023, addressing a contempt petition against the Jharkhand government for allowing Sinha to continue in office past his retirement date of January 31, 2022. The court had directed the state to comply with the requisitions of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) regarding the appointment of a new DGP.
In September 2021, the court had criticized the state government and UPSC for violating its directive on the appointment of an interim DGP, emphasizing the need for adherence to a fixed tenure policy and selection from a UPSC-prepared list.
