Amritsar, 25th May: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Councillor Harjinder Singh Bahman was shot dead by three bike-borne assailants near a Gurdwara in Amritsar’s Chheharta area on Saturday. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, has reignited concerns over Punjab’s deteriorating law and order situation.
According to police officials, the masked attackers intercepted Harjinder Singh as he exited a function and opened fire. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. “At least three men approached him on a bike and fired multiple rounds. We have launched an investigation,” said Harpal Singh Randhawa, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police.
The victim’s family alleged that the same individuals had previously threatened him and even fired at his house days ago. They expressed frustration over the lack of police action despite a complaint.
SAD General Secretary Bikram Singh Majithia shared CCTV footage of the earlier attack on social media, showing masked assailants firing at Harjinder Singh’s residence. “Despite prior complaints, no action was taken. Today, he was murdered. Is this the rule of law under the AAP government?” Majithia said, directly accusing the Bhagwant Mann-led administration of negligence.
In the video, two men are seen attempting to shoot at the Councillor’s house in the early hours. One assailant’s weapon jams, but the other successfully fires shots before both flee the scene.
Majithia demanded accountability from the state government, asking why no action followed a complaint submitted to the Director General of Police. “The Mann government must wake up and take urgent steps to restore law and order in Punjab,” he said.
Police have not yet made any arrests and are examining CCTV footage and witness testimonies as part of the ongoing investigation.
