New Delhi, 18th Jan. Congress leader Ajay Maken has voiced his opposition to any alliance between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi, reiterating his earlier remarks against AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. Addressing a press conference at the new Congress headquarters in Delhi on Saturday, Maken stated, “It is my personal view that there should be no alliance with AAP.”
Maken criticized the Congress’s past support for AAP, particularly in 2013 and during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, arguing it had weakened the party and benefited the BJP. “The people of Delhi suffered due to our support to AAP in 2013, and the BJP gained. AAP’s prominence in Delhi only helps the BJP,” he added.
He also stood by his previous remark that Kejriwal is “anti-national,” emphasizing that AAP has failed to effectively counter the BJP in Delhi. Maken pointed out that during Sheila Dikshit’s tenure as Chief Minister, the Congress secured all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, preventing the BJP from gaining a foothold at the Centre.
“In contrast, under AAP’s leadership, the BJP has consistently won all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, which has helped them form the national government. Who is really helping the BJP?” Maken questioned.
The Congress leader highlighted the need for a strong national presence for his party to challenge the BJP effectively, asserting that alliances with regional parties like AAP dilute the Congress’s strength.
Referring to past alliance talks with AAP in Delhi and Haryana, Maken noted that Kejriwal had unilaterally decided to contest all Assembly seats in Haryana, despite advanced discussions. “The Congress wanted an alliance, but Kejriwal announced his party’s solo contest soon after his release from jail,” Maken said.
He concluded by emphasizing that a robust Congress presence in Delhi is critical to stopping the BJP, both in the capital and nationally.
