AIIMS-Delhi Doctors to Protest in Delhi Seeking Justice for West Bengal Rape and Murder Victim

New Delhi, 31st August. Doctors from AIIMS-Delhi, led by the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA), will hold a peaceful protest in the national capital on Saturday afternoon, demanding justice for the rape and murder victim at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal. The protest will take place at Jantar Mantar, with medical professionals across the country being urged to join.

Dr. Suvrankar Datta, Vice President of FAIMA and a senior resident doctor at AIIMS-New Delhi, emphasized the need for increased protection for healthcare workers. “We are organizing a large peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar on August 31 to seek justice for our colleague at RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal,” Dr. Datta stated, calling on the Central Government to implement a nationwide protection act for healthcare professionals to prevent violence against them.

The protest, scheduled from 3 P.M. to 5 P.M., comes in the wake of repeated physical and sexual assaults on medical professionals, particularly women while on duty. Dr. Datta urged doctors nationwide to show solidarity ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on September 5. “We want to demonstrate our unity and demand increased security in hospitals across the country,” he added.

The incident in Kolkata has sparked nationwide strikes and protests by doctors, severely impacting medical services. However, following an intervention by the Supreme Court on August 22, the striking doctors returned to work. The Supreme Court assured the medical community that it would address their concerns and prevent any adverse actions against the protesting doctors.
