AIADMK Students’ Wing Members Detained During Protest for Justice in Anna University Assault Case

Chennai, 6th Jan. Scores of AIADMK Students’ Wing members were detained by police in Chennai on Monday when they attempted to stage a protest outside Anna University, demanding justice for a student sexually assaulted on the university campus in December 2024.

The protesters sought to distribute black bands to students and the public as a sign of solidarity with the victim and to pressure the state government to arrest the actual perpetrator. An AIADMK member explained that the protest aimed to draw attention to the case and seek justice.

However, police detained all the protesters for holding the demonstration without permission. Authorities stated that the detained individuals would be released later in the day.

AIADMK Students’ Wing Secretary, Singai G. Ramachandran, condemned the police action, questioning why the ruling DMK government appeared to be afraid of the black bands. “Why are they afraid of black bands? Who is that person the arrested man purportedly referred to?” Ramachandran asked, as he was taken into custody.

Since the assault came to light in December 2024, the AIADMK has been leading state-wide protests, demanding the arrest of the actual culprit. Police have already arrested one person in connection with the case, but the AIADMK insists that the real perpetrator remains at large.

The case continues to spark outrage, and further protests are expected as the political party presses for justice.
