Sultanpur, 13th Jan. Sanjay Singh, an Aam Aadmi Party MP, and five others, including former Samajwadi Party MLA Anoop Sanda, were sentenced to three months in prison by a Sultanpur court.

They were also fined Rs 1,500 each by the court.

The judgment was given by the MP-MLA court in a 21-year-old case that was filed on June 19, 2001.

People had blocked the road and staged a massive protest against the then-BJP government in Uttar Pradesh, led by Rajnath Singh, according to police.

The protest was in response to frequent power outages and inadequate water supply in Sultanpur.

The police had filed a case against Sanjay Singh, Anoop Sanda, supporters Vijay Kumar, Kamal Srivastava, Santosh Kumar and Subhash for blocking the road and demonstrating, said government counsel Vaibhav Pandey.

Singh, who was present in court during the decision, blamed the then-BJP government for mishandling the otherwise peaceful protest. He stated that he will appeal the sentence to the Supreme Court.
