“Aadi Mahotsav Highlights Tribal Heritage”, says President Murmu

New Delhi, 17th Feb. President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday inaugurated the National Tribal Festival ‘Aadi Mahotsav’ in New Delhi, marking a celebration of the tribal heritage of India. The event, running from February 16 to 24, 2025, at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, aims to showcase the rich and diverse cultural traditions of the country’s tribal communities.

In her address, President Murmu emphasized the significance of Aadi Mahotsav as a platform to highlight the heritage of tribal society. She noted that the festival offers a valuable opportunity for tribal entrepreneurs, artisans, and artists to connect with markets, thereby promoting their crafts, food, dress, jewelry, medical practices, household equipment, and sports as essential cultural assets.

“The crafts and practices of the tribal society are not just precious heritage; they embody modernity and science, reflecting a harmonious relationship with nature and ideals of sustainability,” said the President.

The President also spoke on the efforts made over the past decade to improve the welfare and development of tribal communities. She highlighted the increase in the Tribal Development Budget, which has grown fivefold to approximately ₹1.25 lakh crore, alongside a threefold rise in the Tribal Welfare Budget, reaching ₹15,000 crore. She noted that the government’s focus on tribal progress is aligned with the overall growth of the country, as the development of tribal society is essential for India’s prosperity.

Pleased with the progress in economic empowerment and employment of tribal communities, President Murmu further mentioned the educational advancements, including the establishment of over 470 Eklavya Model Residential Schools, which are providing quality education to around 1.25 lakh tribal children. In addition, the launch of 30 new medical colleges in tribal areas and a national mission aimed at eradicating sickle cell anemia by 2047 were highlighted as major steps forward.

Aadi Mahotsav promises to be a vibrant showcase of tribal culture, offering visitors a glimpse into the traditions, crafts, and lifestyle of the country’s tribal population.
