New Delhi, 19th July. The Muzaffarnagar police directive requiring eatery owners along the Kanwar Yatra route in Muzaffarnagar to prominently display their names has sparked a heated controversy. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has strongly criticized the move, arguing that it contravenes constitutional principles and fosters divisiveness.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra condemned the order, stating, “Creating division in society on the basis of caste and religion is a crime against the Constitution. This order should be withdrawn immediately and strict action should be taken against the officials who issued it.” She further emphasized that the Constitution guarantees every citizen freedom from discrimination based on caste, religion, or other grounds.
The directive, issued by the local police, mandates that all eateries, including carts and kiosks, display the names of their proprietors. Senior Superintendent of Police, Abhishek Singh, explained that the measure aims to prevent confusion and maintain order during the religious procession. “Preparations have begun for the Kanwar Yatra. All food joints have been instructed to display the names of their proprietors to ensure clarity and avoid future allegations,” Singh said.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has alleged that the order is intended to prevent Kanwariyas from purchasing items from Muslim-owned shops. Critics have likened the directive to discriminatory policies reminiscent of apartheid and Nazi Germany.
In response to the growing outcry, the police clarified that the intent behind the order was to assist devotees and not to discriminate based on religion. The Kanwar Yatra, an annual pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Shiva, is set to begin on July 22.
