New Delhi, 4th Jan. The Supreme Court will hear a petition challenging the Uttarakhand High Court’s order directing the removal of encroachments on 29 acres of railway land in Haldwani on Thursday.
After advocate Prashant Bhushan raised the issue, a bench comprised of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices S A Nazeer and P S Narasimha scheduled a hearing.
Bhushan argued that the case, which involves the demolition of over 5,000 houses in Haldwani, is similar to the one scheduled to be heard on Thursday.
The Supreme Court agreed to tag the case and scheduled a hearing for Thursday.
Previously, some Haldwani residents had petitioned the Supreme Court on the matter.
On December 20, the Uttarakhand High Court ordered the removal of encroachments from 29 acres of railway land in the town’s Banbhoolpura area, after giving encroachers a one-week notice to vacate.
Thousands of Banbhoolpura residents had protested the removal of encroachments, claiming that it would make them homeless and jeopardize the future of their school-aged children. The relocation will have a significant impact on women, children, and the elderly.
