New Delhi, 23rd Nov. A day after the Assam-Meghalaya border clashes, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the BJP’s North-East Democratic Alliance of failing the Northeast and urged Home Minister Amit Shah to resolve the border dispute between the two states.
Six people were killed in violence at the disputed Assam-Meghalaya border in the early hours of Tuesday after an Assam forest guard intercepted a truck allegedly laden with illegally felled timber.
“Deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident at the Assam-Meghalaya border. 6 precious lives were lost,” Kharge tweeted.
“BJP’s NEDA has failed North East. It is high time the Union Home Minister resolves the border dispute between two states before things turn more hostile,” the Congress chief said.
Let there be peace, Kharge added.
NEDA is a political coalition led by the BJP and regional parties from the region.
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, whose party is an ally of the BJP, complained in a tweet tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Shah, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Sarma that Assam Police and forest guards “entered Meghalaya and resorted to unprovoked firing.”
According to Assam Police officials, the truck was intercepted by a forest department team in the state’s West Karbi Anglong district, and a mob from Meghalaya later attacked the forest guards and policemen from the state, prompting the Assam side to fire to bring the situation under control.
