Lahore, 4th Nov. Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was shot in the leg Thursday in Wazirabad by unidentified assailants while leading supporters in a long march from Lahore to Islamabad demanding early elections.
Chaotic scenes erupted near his party’s reception camp at Allahwala Chowk in the area, according to Geo News.
According to Geo News, the perpetrator has been caught. According to the report, several others were injured, including PTI leader Faisal Javed.
Javed’s face was bandaged and bloodied in television footage.
Khan, who has been admitted to hospital, was on a seven-day “Haqeeqi Azadi Long March” in a container.
Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi has directed the provincial inspector general of police to conduct an investigation into the incident and submit a report.
“Those responsible for this incident will be brought to justice soon,” the chief minister said, adding that the injured would receive the best medical care possible.
Local television stations broadcast footage of an injured Khan being moved from the container to a vehicle with the assistance of his security.
According to Imran Ismail of the PTI, Khan was shot three or four times in the leg. Ismail was standing next to Khan when the shooting took place, he said, adding that the attacker “was wielding an AK-47 rifle.”
According to PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry, Khan was shot in a planned attack. “Imran Khan is our red line,” said party veteran Shahbaz Gill, “and an attempt has been made to cross that red line.” Khan, he said, will fight until his last breath.
According to party leader Asad Umar, the attacker used an automatic weapon. Shireen Mazari, a colleague, stated that “string pullers and the establishment would be held accountable by the nation for this murderous attack on Imran Khan.”
She demanded the arrest of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah. She wrote on Twitter: “Rana Sana threatened to murder IK & today we saw him attempt that. He should be arrested on attempted murder as his public statement bear witness to same.”
According to local newspaper Dawn, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif “severely condemned” the incident and directed the Interior Minister to seek an immediate report.
Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry, said Thursday evening that the country was “keeping a close eye” and would continue to monitor ongoing developments.
