Manipur, 3rd September. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has given a significant blow to the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) in the northeast, as five of seven MLAs from Manipur have joined the BJP.
Previously, the majority of JDU MLAs defected to the BJP in Arunachal Pradesh, creating havoc for Nitish Kumar’s party.
According to a statement from the Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretariat, five JDU MLAs merged with the ruling BJP on Friday.
According to a statement released by the Legislative Assembly Secretariat, “the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly is pleased to accept the merger of five JD(U) MLAs with the BJP under the tenth schedule of the Constitution.”
Joykishan Singh, Ngursanglur Sanate, Md. Achab Uddin, Thangjam Arunkumar, and LM Khaute are among them.
In the recently held Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party won a majority of 32 seats in the 60-member state Assembly, according to the results announced on March 10.
The lone JDU MLA from Arunachal Pradesh joined the BJP on August 25, 2022, in the presence of national president JP Nadda and Arunachal CM Pema Khandu.
The latest political developments come just weeks after Nitish Kumar left the BJP to form a coalition government with Tejashwi Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Congress, and other parties in Bihar.
With the addition of Techi Kaso, the BJP now has 49 of the 60 Assembly seats (MLA).
Eight JDU corporators have joined the BJP, bringing the total number of BJP corporators to 18 out of 20. Furthermore, 17 of the JDU’s 18 Zilla Parishad members (ZPM) have joined the BJP.
The BJP now has 206 Zilla Parishad members out of 241 total members. Furthermore, more than 100 JDU Gram Panchayat Members (GPM) joined the BJP. With this, the BJP now has around 6530 votes out of a total of 8332.
According to those who are aware of the development, the BJP has made the decision to retaliate against the JDU following the recent events in Bihar.
In 2020, the BJP-JD(U) fought an election alliance and went on to form the government, with Nitish Kumar as chief minister.
In less than two years, Nitish Kumar flipped his choices and, in an unexpected move, formed an alliance with the RJD and the Congress to form a ‘Grand Alliance’ government in Bihar.
