Lucknow, 22nd July. Om Prakash Rajbhar, the leader of the Samajwadi Party’s alliance partner Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), has been granted ‘Y’ category security by the Uttar Pradesh government, according to officials on Friday.
A protectee is given 11 security personnel, including two personal security officers, under the “Y” category security cover (PSO).
The announcement comes just days after Rajbhar’s party broke with the SP and voted for Droupadi Murmu, the NDA’s candidate in the July 18 presidential election, who defeated her rival and Opposition nominee Yashwant Sinha.
Joint Secretary of Home Department Vinay Kumar Singh stated in a letter to the additional director general of police (security) that it has been decided to extend ‘Y’ category security to SBSP president and Zahurabad MLA Om Prakash Rajbhar provisionally in anticipation of a decision in this regard.
Singh also requested that the ADG complete the necessary paperwork in the matter.
When reached, SBSP national spokesperson and Rajbhar’s son Arjun stated that the party president is being provided ‘Y’ category security.
The SBSP contested in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections earlier this year in coalition with the SP. However, relations between the two allies have recently strained.
SP president Akhilesh Yadav did not invite Rajbhar to a meeting in support of Sinha held in Lucknow earlier this month, despite the presence of another party ally and Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary.
Later, Rajbhar stated that the SBSP would support Murmu, but that his six-MLA party would remain a part of the opposition coalition that fought the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections together.
