New Delhi, 20th June. On Monday, almost 80 trains were cancelled due to protests in various parts of the country over the new Armed Forces recruitment scheme.
According to Northern Railways, a total of 18 East-bound train services scheduled from various Northern Railway terminals have been cancelled today.
In the wake of the protests over the Centre’s Agnipath recruiting plan, it has announced that 71 Delhi-bound commuter trains (including return services) have been cancelled for today.
The Western Railway zone’s train services were disrupted yesterday as well. On Monday, amid protests over the Centre’s new Agnipath recruitment plan, security was stepped up in various states.
On June 14, protests erupted in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Telangana, Odisha, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Jharkhand, and Assam following the announcement of the policy, which allows Indian youths to serve in the regular cadre of the Armed Forces for a term of four years.
As the agitation intensified in some areas, protestors went on the rampage, torching trains, cars, and wrecking both private and public property.
Congress General Secretary in-charge Communications Jairam Ramesh tweeted on Sunday, “Tomorrow lakhs of Congress workers across the country will continue peaceful protests against the anti-youth Agnipath scheme and against Modi government’s vendetta politics targeting its MP Rahul Gandhi.”
