New Delhi, 16th April. There was peace all around under the leadership of Kaushaladhish Prabhu Shri Ram.
The coronation of Shri Ram took place. King Rama sent off all the monkeys soldiers and demon friends with respect. Ram wept while leaving Angad. Even Shri Ram did not have the power to send Hanuman away. Mother Sita also considered him a daughter-in-law. Hanuman remained in Ayodhya.
Ram was busy in the administration, in the court throughout the day. When Sandha got exemption from government work, then the teacher came to his room asking for the well being of the mothers. Hanuman was just behind them. In Ram’s private room, all his uncles were present along with their respective wives. This was the first time after exile, war, and then the endless formalities that the whole family was present together. Not only to Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, perhaps to other brides, it seemed inappropriate to have an outsider, that is, Hanuman. Since Shatrughna was the youngest, he was asking Hanuman to leave the room only in signals to fulfill the wishes of his sisters-in-law and his wife. But surprisingly, even a knower like Hanuman was unable to understand this minor sign.
In his presence, for a long time, the whole family talked wholeheartedly. Then Bharat realized that his brother-in-law should also get solitude. Seeing Urmila, he used to get hooked. This virtuous person also needs the company of her husband. So he took permission from Rama, and advised everyone to go and take a rest. Everyone got up and went to touch the feet of Ram and Janaki. But Hanuman remained sitting there. Seeing them, everyone else started waiting for them to get up, so that everyone came out together.
Shatrughan said with a little anger, “But brother, Kapishvara needs rest! He needs solitude.”
“Yes, then which one do I obstruct the rest of the Lord. I am sitting here for a long time.”
“You probably haven’t heard. Brother needs solitude.”
“But Mother Sita is here. Even she is not going. Then why do you want to take me out?”
“The sister-in-law has the right to be with her brother even in her solitude. Don’t you see the vermilion on her forehead?
Hanuman was astonished. Prabhu said to Shri Ram, “Lord, by applying this vermilion, does anyone get the right to be near you?”
Rama smiled and said, “Sure. This is the eternal practice, Hanuman.”
Hearing this, Hanuman got up in despair and went out after bowing to Ram-Janaki.
In the morning the court of King Ram was held. Simple ceremonial functions were being done, so that the eminent businessmen of the city appeared in court seeking justice. It was learned that Hanuman had been creating a ruckus throughout the night in Ayodhya by destroying the stores of traders. Rama heard all this and ordered the soldiers to present Hanuman in court. The soldiers had not yet come out to obey Ramagya. That Hanuman, dressed in saffron color, appeared in the meeting, walking with his wide smile and elephant-like gait. His whole body was covered with vermilion. On taking every step, every single head of vermilion from his body would fall to the ground. With his movement, the vermilion kept flying backwards with the wind.
Rama smiled and said to Hanuman, “Why brave, you also go. Take some rest.”
Hanuman said, “Lord, you are in front, can there be anything more relaxing than this? I am not going to leave you.”
Coming near Rama, he bowed. The assembly, still looking stunned, suddenly started laughing out loud. Ultimately, the monkey did the same thing as the monkeys. Stopping his laughter, Soumitra Lakshmana said, “What did this Kapishresh do? Why this bath with vermilion? Is this a custom of you monkeys?”
Hanuman said in a cheerful voice, “Oh no brother. This is the custom of the Aryans. I came to know only yesterday that if I put a pinch of vermilion, I get the right to be near Lord Rama. So I applied vermilion to the whole of Ayodhya. Why Lord, now no one will be able to take me away from you, right?”
The whole gathering was laughing. And Bharata was shedding tears with folded hands. Seeing this, Shatrughan said, “Brother, everyone is laughing and you are crying? What happened?”
Bharata, taking care of himself, said, “Anuj, you are not looking! A great leader of the monkeys, the most learned minister of the monkey king, perhaps the best hero of the entire human race, the master of all siddhis, all the riches, versed in Vedas, penetrating the scriptures, this Kapishreshta is his own.” How is all pride, all knowledge forgotten how one is absorbed in Rama’s devotion. Even if someone remembers, the world will never forget this devotee, Shiromani Hanuman.
