The AAP accuses the BJP government of postponing municipal elections out of fear of defeat

GG News Bureau,
New Delhi, 16th
April. Municipal elections are causing a schism between the AAP and the BJP government.

The BJP-led Center’s attempt to postpone the April civic elections in Delhi by proposing a merger of three municipal corporations between the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party backfired. Many allegations have been leveled against the BJP as a result of the postponement of the municipal elections.

What is the squabble over MCD elections?

While the Delhi SEC was about to announce elections for the North, South, and East MCDs on March 9, the Center ordered the SEC to postpone the elections on the same day, claiming that the three parts of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi should be merged into one. I was informed MCD’s current term expires on May 18.

The Union Cabinet eventually approved the Delhi Municipal Corporation Bill on March 22, 2022, and the bill was also passed in the Lok Sabha on March 25, 2022.
The BJP had also raised the demand for the integration of three MCDs in 2014 and 2017, but now, just before the elections, the Center’s decision is worth considering.

Following the Center’s decision, the AAP government in Delhi has erupted, accusing the BJP one after the other.
The AAP has stated that integration of the three MCDs can take place at any time. But the BJP government’s decision to do so so close to the elections is a ploy to postpone the upcoming MCD elections. The BJP is concerned that it will not lose the MCD elections in Delhi.

AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj also made a statement in which he stated that the BJP postponed the assembly elections in Delhi for a year even in 2014 due to fear of defeat, after which the Supreme Court conducted elections in Delhi and then, after lakhs of BJP efforts, Delhi was reelected. The Aam Aadmi Party won 67 of the 70 seats in this election, and the AAP formed the government. Bhardwaj also stated that no matter how much time passes or excuses are made, the BJP’s defeat in the Delhi Municipal Corporation is unavoidable.
Following the formation of the AAP government in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party, which is already overconfident, forgets that the BJP has held all three MCDs for the last 15 years.
The Aam Aadmi Party is attempting to gain control of municipal bodies, but it is up to the people to decide who they elect.

However, the Ministry of Home Affairs’ justification for combining the three MCDs is worth considering. According to the ministry, frequent strikes by employees due to non-payment of salaries and unequal distribution of assets and liabilities lead to an imbalance in municipal corporations’ income and expenditure. As a result, integration of these institutions in Delhi is required.
