Rahul Gandhi’s Defamation Case Hearing Deferred

Sultanpur, 17th May: The hearing in a defamation case filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was postponed on Saturday in a Sultanpur court, owing to a workshop attended by lawyers.

The case, lodged by local BJP politician Vijay Mishra in 2018, pertains to alleged objectionable remarks made by Mr Gandhi against senior BJP leader Amit Shah during the Karnataka assembly elections.

Santosh Kumar Pandey, counsel for the complainant, said the absence of lawyers due to the workshop led to the adjournment. The court has now fixed June 2 as the next date of hearing.

At the previous hearing on April 28, witness Anil Mishra was presented before the special MP/MLA court. Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer, Kashi Prasad Shukla, had begun the cross-examination, which remains incomplete.

After five years of proceedings, the court issued a warrant against Mr Gandhi in December 2023. The Rae Bareli MP subsequently surrendered in February 2024 and was granted bail on two sureties of ₹25,000 each.

Mr Gandhi had earlier recorded his statement on July 26, 2023, denying the charges and terming the case a “political conspiracy.”

The hearing has faced multiple delays in recent months due to lawyers’ strikes and the ill health of Mr Gandhi’s counsel. On February 11, the defence completed the cross-examination of the complainant.
