New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed deep sorrow over the passing of eminent scientist and education reformist Dr. K. Kasturirangan, calling him a “towering figure in India’s scientific and educational journey.” In a heartfelt message posted on X, PM Modi paid tribute to the former ISRO Chairman’s remarkable legacy and lasting impact on India’s space and education sectors.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. K. Kasturirangan,” the Prime Minister wrote. “His visionary leadership and selfless contribution to the nation will always be remembered.”
Dr. Kasturirangan, who led the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) during a crucial period, played a pivotal role in expanding India’s space capabilities. Under his leadership, ISRO saw several ambitious satellite launches and strengthened its global standing in the space community. PM Modi acknowledged these achievements, stating, “He served ISRO with great diligence, steering India’s space programme to new heights, for which we also received global recognition.”
Beyond space science, Dr. Kasturirangan’s contributions to India’s education reform were also widely lauded. As the architect of the National Education Policy (NEP), he was instrumental in shaping a more holistic, inclusive, and forward-looking learning framework for India. “India will always be grateful to Dr. Kasturirangan for his efforts during the drafting of the NEP and in ensuring that learning in India became more holistic and forward-looking,” PM Modi added.
Calling him an “outstanding mentor,” the Prime Minister also remembered Dr. Kasturirangan’s role in nurturing a new generation of scientists and researchers.
The Prime Minister concluded his message with words of comfort for the bereaved: “My thoughts are with his family, students, scientists and countless admirers. Om Shanti.”
Dr. Kasturirangan’s demise marks the end of an era in Indian science and education. His legacy, however, will continue to inspire generations to come.
