New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has strongly condemned the killing of 28 civilians by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam area on April 22. In a statement issued today, the Commission called the attack a “dastardly” act that violated fundamental human rights and demanded immediate action against those responsible.
The NHRC expressed deep anguish over the incident, where terrorists reportedly identified victims based on their faith before executing the mass killing. “The incident has shaken the conscience of every right-thinking human being,” the Commission stated, adding that such acts represent a grave violation of human rights including the right to life, liberty, and dignity.
Labeling terrorism as one of the “biggest causes of human rights violations in the world,” the Commission stressed that the time has come to act decisively against individuals and entities aiding, abetting, or supporting terrorism in any form. “Otherwise, it may result in the shrinking of democratic space, intimidation, reprisals, disharmony among communities, and grave violation of various human rights,” the statement warned.
The NHRC urged the State to take all necessary steps to fix accountability, ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice, and extend all possible support to the families of the victims. “The State is expected to provide succour in every possible manner,” it added.
