Malda, West Bengal 17 April 2025 : In a bone-chilling incident that has shaken the quiet village of Dinutola in West Bengal’s Malda district, a seemingly innocent game turned into a scene of blood and chaos as a bomb — mistaken for a ball — exploded in the hands of unsuspecting children.
At approximately 3 PM on Thursday, five children from the locality were playing near an abandoned house in Birnagar 2 Gram Panchayat, under the jurisdiction of Kaliachak police station. The deserted property, once owned by a man named Farman Sheikh, had long become a forgotten ruin — or so the villagers thought. But what lay hidden inside turned a playful afternoon into a nightmare.
According to eyewitnesses, the children found what appeared to be a ball and began playing with it. Suddenly, in a horrifying turn of events, the “ball” exploded when one of the children threw it on the ground. The deafening blast left two children severely injured and others stunned into unconsciousness. The explosion rocked the area, sending shockwaves through the village.
Locals, alarmed by the blast, rushed to the site and found the children lying injured and dazed. Immediate efforts were made to rescue them, and the injured were rushed to Seelampur Rural Hospital for emergency treatment.
The Kaliachak police arrived swiftly and sealed off the area. Forensic teams are expected to comb through the site to determine the nature of the explosive and how it came to be inside an abandoned house — a chilling reminder of the region’s sporadic history of violence and illegal arms hoarding.
In a twist to the already disturbing incident, the Vaishnavnagar police have also launched a parallel probe, raising concerns of a larger nexus behind the presence of explosives in residential areas. The identity of Farman Sheikh, the house owner, is now under the scanner.
Fear has gripped the villagers, with parents now scared to let their children out to play. “What if there are more such devices lying around?” asked one distraught mother.
This is not the first time Kaliachak has witnessed a bomb-related scare, but the use of an abandoned house as a potential arms stash has taken the fear to an entirely new level. As investigators probe deeper, the big question remains — who planted the bomb, and why?
