Bihar’s JD(U) and HAM Back Waqf Amendment Bill, Foil Opposition’s Plans

Patna/ New Delhi: The NDA’s key allies, including Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP, Chirag Paswan’s LJP, and Jitan Ram Manjhi’s HAM, have openly backed the Waqf Amendment Bill, dealing a blow to the opposition’s strategy.

Originally introduced in Parliament on August 8 last year, the bill was referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), which began its review on August 22. After months of deliberations, the revised draft was approved on February 27 and is now set for reintroduction in the Lok Sabha after nine months.

Meanwhile, Union Minister and HAM chief Jitan Ram Manjhi expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media, stating, “The Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 will shatter the dreams of certain political parties. Those who were inciting Muslims against the bill will now receive a fitting response from our government.” He further asserted that once the bill is passed, “every Muslim in the country will say—‘Modi hai to mumkin hai’ (With Modi, everything is possible).”

With NDA and its allies commanding 293 MPs in favor of the bill, while the INDIA bloc and other opposition parties have 239, the government appears poised for victory. The stance of 10 MPs, including four from Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP, remains uncertain.

By declaring their support ahead of the crucial vote, NDA allies have left the opposition scrambling for options, setting the stage for an intense showdown in the Lok Sabha.
