Lok Sabha Set for Heated Debate as Kiren Rijiju Introduces Waqf Amendment Bill

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha is set for a marathon debate today as Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduces the Waqf Amendment Bill. The legislation has sparked intense political exchanges, with the Opposition raising concerns over its provisions and the process of its review. The Bill is scheduled to be tabled around noon.

The proposed amendments aim to revise the 1995 law governing Waqf properties, with the Centre stating that the changes will enhance their management. However, the Congress and other Opposition parties have accused the government of rushing the Bill without incorporating their suggestions during the review by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

Both the BJP and Congress have issued whips, directing their MPs to be present and participate in the discussion. The ruling NDA holds a strong majority, with 295 votes compared to the Opposition’s 234, making it likely that the Bill will pass in the Lower House.

The TDP, an NDA ally, has declared its support for the Bill while reiterating its commitment to minority welfare. The JDU, another key ally, has urged the government not to implement the legislation with retrospective effect.

A major point of contention in the Bill is the provision allowing non-Muslim members in the Central Waqf Council and Waqf Boards. Additionally, the Bill states that government land identified as Waqf will no longer be considered Waqf property, with the District Collector determining ownership.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has urged secular parties to oppose the Bill, calling it discriminatory and unconstitutional. The organization argues that the proposed changes violate fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.

Eight hours have been allocated for the debate, though this duration may be extended. If the Bill passes in the Lok Sabha, it will proceed to the Rajya Sabha for further discussion and approval.
