Govt to Establish ‘Ambedkar Chair’ and Student Facilities at Mumbai University

Mumbai: Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment Dr. Virendra Kumar announced the establishment of an ‘Ambedkar Chair’ at the University of Mumbai to promote research on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s contributions to social justice and equality. The announcement was made at the ‘Samvidhan Amrit Mahotsav’, commemorating 75 years of the Indian Constitution.

Dr. Kumar also revealed plans to construct two new hostels at the university to support students and set up a coaching center for marginalized communities preparing for competitive exams. He emphasized that these initiatives align with Dr. Ambedkar’s vision of inclusive growth and equal opportunities.

Highlighting Dr. Ambedkar’s deep connection with Mumbai University, Dr. Kumar stated, “Dr. Ambedkar’s journey from a student here to the architect of the Constitution is a testament to his vision for India’s social and economic democracy.” He stressed that democracy is incomplete without a balance between fundamental rights and duties, urging youth to actively participate in nation-building.

As part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, Dr. Kumar appealed to students to lead the fight against substance abuse, protecting both themselves and their communities.

Speaking at the event, Amit Yadav, Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, praised Mumbai University’s role in shaping India’s legal and social framework, noting that it produced leaders like Dr. Ambedkar. Maharashtra’s Higher Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ravindra Kulkarni, and senior officials were also present.

The event, attended by students and faculty, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to Dr. Ambedkar’s ideals of social and economic empowerment.
