“Language is Beyond Literature, Defines Civilization”: VP Dhankhar at Marathi Sahitya Sammelan

New Delhi: Vice-President of India, in his interaction with the delegates at the 98th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, emphasized the pivotal role of language and culture in defining a nation’s identity. He stated that a country’s greatest asset is its cultural heritage, and language is the most authentic pillar of this legacy.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President underscored Bharat’s unique civilizational ethos, shaped over thousands of years. He asserted that it is both a duty and a constitutional obligation to preserve and promote Indian culture and languages. Applauding the organizers of the event, he extended his appreciation for their efforts in safeguarding literary heritage.

Referring to the Indian Constitution, he highlighted the foresight of the founding fathers in embedding cultural values within its framework. He cited various symbolic elements in the Constitution, such as ‘Satyameva Jayate,’ the Mohenjo-Daro seals, the Gurukul system, and depictions of historical narratives like Lord Krishna’s guidance to Arjuna in the Mahabharata.

The Vice-President also mentioned the inclusion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s image in the section on elections, emphasizing his role as a great administrator and nationalist leader. He remarked that Maharashtra has produced extraordinary personalities across all spheres, with literature standing as one of the most influential contributions.

He further elaborated on the historical suppression of Indian languages and culture by foreign invaders, stressing the need for linguistic and cultural resurgence. Highlighting the importance of linguistic freedom, he asserted that nurturing one’s language is integral to democratic principles.

Celebrating Marathi’s literary richness, he acknowledged its contribution to India’s knowledge reservoir and urged both the Central and Maharashtra governments to leverage technology for wider dissemination of regional languages. He lauded the National Education Policy (NEP) for its emphasis on mother tongues, asserting that organic linguistic evolution fosters lasting wisdom.

Concluding his address, he recited lines from Marathi literature that celebrate inclusivity and national unity, expressing his deep admiration for the language’s richness and cultural significance.
