Vijender Gupta Returns as Delhi Assembly Speaker After 2015 Eviction Drama

New Delhi

Ten years after being forcibly evicted from the Delhi Assembly, BJP leader Vijender Gupta has made a remarkable comeback—this time as the Speaker of the House.

Gupta, who retained his Rohini seat in the 2025 Delhi elections, was elected Speaker following the BJP’s resounding victory. Expressing gratitude to his party, he said, “I am thankful for this responsibility and will ensure healthy discussions in the House.”

In 2015, dramatic visuals showed Gupta being physically removed by marshals after he refused to leave the Assembly during a heated exchange over alleged derogatory remarks made by BJP’s OP Sharma against then-AAP MLA Alka Lamba. The chaotic scene saw Gupta clinging to furniture in protest before being carried out by security personnel.

With the BJP forming the government in Delhi after a decade, Rekha Gupta was sworn in as the Chief Minister, while Parvesh Verma, initially expected to get the top post, joined the cabinet. The Aam Aadmi Party has yet to comment on Vijender Gupta’s appointment as Speaker.
