Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar Urges Caution Amid Surge in Guillain-Barre Syndrome Cases in Pune

Pune.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has urged the public to take necessary precautions following a sharp rise in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune. The outbreak has so far resulted in 181 reported cases and eight fatalities, prompting increased surveillance by the Maharashtra Health Department.

Speaking at the Pune Municipal Corporation’s 75th anniversary celebration, Pawar addressed growing concerns regarding a possible link between undercooked chicken and GBS. While health officials have not established a direct connection, he advised the public to ensure proper food hygiene and thoroughly cook meat to minimize any potential health risks.

Health Department Intensifies Monitoring

According to the Maharashtra Health Department, 120 of the 181 affected patients have been discharged, while 47 remain in intensive care. Authorities are conducting detailed epidemiological investigations to determine the exact cause of the outbreak.

The rise in GBS cases has raised alarm among Pune residents, with many questioning whether poultry consumption could be a contributing factor. However, no scientific evidence has confirmed chicken as the source of infection.

No Need for Chicken Culling, Says Pawar

Addressing fears over a possible culling of poultry, Pawar clarified that there is no need for such a measure at this stage. After consulting with the Divisional Commissioner and health experts, he reiterated that no direct link has been found between GBS and chicken consumption. However, he urged citizens to practice food safety measures, such as cooking meat at high temperatures to eliminate any risks.

As the state government continues its active monitoring, health officials have assured the public that necessary steps are being taken to control the outbreak and prevent further fatalities.
