New Delhi, 15th Feb. The Centre has launched a probe into alleged violations of building norms during the renovation of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence at 6 Flagstaff Road. The decision follows a report submitted by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) on February 13.

The CPWD has been instructed to conduct a detailed inquiry into claims that government regulations were bypassed to facilitate the extravagant renovation of the 40,000-square-yard bungalow, dubbed “Sheeshmahal” by the BJP.

On Monday, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva urged Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to annul the alleged merger of four government properties with the residence. He also declared that the BJP’s newly elected Chief Minister would not occupy the premises.

The bungalow was Kejriwal’s official residence from 2015 until October 2024, when he vacated it after resigning amid political scrutiny. The BJP had made corruption a key issue in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, ultimately ending AAP’s rule by securing 48 of the 70 seats.

A report by the PWD in October 2024 detailed high-end renovations, providing ammunition for BJP’s campaign against AAP. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a rally, took a veiled dig at Kejriwal, stating, “I could have built a ‘Sheeshmahal’ too, but I chose to build homes for the poor.”

Kejriwal dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, accusing the BJP of using personal attacks to divert attention from its governance record. The investigation is expected to determine whether government norms were violated in the bungalow’s expansion.
