New Delhi, 12th Feb. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan on Wednesday refuted allegations of evading arrest and accused the Delhi Police of framing him in a false case.
In a letter sent to Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora via email, the Okhla MLA claimed he was in his constituency and not absconding. “Some people in the Delhi Police are implicating me in a false case. The person whom the Delhi Police came to arrest is already out on bail. The police are trying to cover up their mistake by falsely implicating me,” he wrote in the letter dated February 12.
The Delhi Police registered an FIR against Khan for allegedly leading an attack on a police team in Jamia Nagar on Monday. According to police officials, the mob, led by Khan, helped a proclaimed offender accused in an attempt-to-murder case escape from custody.
A senior police officer said the incident occurred when the Crime Branch attempted to arrest Shabaz Khan, a wanted criminal. During the operation, Amanatullah Khan’s supporters allegedly confronted the police team, allowing Shabaz Khan to escape.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Ravi Kumar Singh denied receiving any letter from Khan. “I have not received any such letter. The investigation is underway, and we are trying to track him. So far, we have not been able to establish any communication with him,” Singh said.
Amanatullah Khan was recently re-elected to the Delhi Assembly, securing victory over BJP’s Manish Chaudhary by a margin of 23,639 votes.
