India to Assist Maldives in Digitizing Parliamentary Resources: Om Birla

New Delhi, 11th Feb. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Maldives, assuring full support in digitizing its parliamentary resources. He made these remarks during a meeting with Maldivian Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla and his delegation at Parliament House.

Birla highlighted India’s advancements in AI-driven legislative digital transformation, including multilingual interpretation services in 15 regional languages, soon to be expanded to 22. Impressed by India’s digital initiatives, the Maldivian Speaker sought India’s technological assistance in modernizing the People’s Majlis, to which Birla assured full cooperation.

Emphasizing India’s Neighbourhood First policy and the SAGAR vision, Birla stressed the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties between the two nations. He expressed confidence that the visit of the Maldivian delegation would further enhance bilateral cooperation.

Discussions also covered capacity-building initiatives, with Birla highlighting PRIDE’s role in training parliamentary officials. He also elaborated on India’s Parliamentary Committee System, describing it as a crucial mechanism for budgetary and policy scrutiny.

The Maldivian delegation, which observed Lok Sabha proceedings, also visited the Parliament Library. Shri Abdulla appreciated the facilities and expressed hope for similar advancements in the Maldivian Parliament.

The meeting was attended by several Members of Parliament, including N.K. Premachandran, Ashish Dubey, and Francis George, along with Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh.
