New Delhi, 6th Feb. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, who passed away on February 4, 2025.
In a message on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi praised the late Imam as a visionary who dedicated his life to service and spirituality. He emphasized Aga Khan’s impactful contributions to health, education, rural development, and women empowerment, which continue to inspire people around the world.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV. His contributions in areas like health, education, rural development, and women empowerment will continue to inspire several people. I will always cherish my interactions with him. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the millions of followers and admirers across the world,” PM Modi wrote.
The late Imam was the founder of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), an organization that has worked globally to improve the quality of life in some of the world’s most impoverished regions. His philanthropic endeavors spanned several fields, helping transform communities in areas such as healthcare and education.
Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, who had ascended to the role of Imam at the young age of 20 in 1957, was widely regarded for his contributions to social welfare and interfaith dialogue. In 2015, he was honored with the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, for his service to humanity.
PM Modi also reflected on his personal interactions with the Prince, who had made significant strides in promoting sustainable development and social justice. He offered condolences to his family and the millions of followers worldwide who mourn his loss.
