New Delhi, 31st Jan. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi acknowledged that the party failed to adequately protect Dalit and backward caste interests in the 1990s, a statement welcomed by the party’s younger leaders.
“Such an admission is a sign of his large-heartedness,” said Congress MP Tanuj Punia, while Kumari Selja added, “There must be something in it if Rahul Ji said it. Shortcomings must be addressed now.”
Addressing a gathering of Dalit influencers, Gandhi stressed that mere political representation was insufficient and that true empowerment required participation in institutions and wealth. He asserted that once the Congress regains its “original base,” the BJP and RSS would be forced to retreat.
However, Congress’ INDIA bloc allies were less impressed. Samajwadi Party leader Ramgopal Yadav remarked that the party’s loss of Dalit support explains its current struggles, while RJD MP Manoj Jha called Gandhi’s admission “a fact” and emphasized the need for a clear plan of action.
On the caste census, a key opposition demand, Jha reiterated its necessity, warning that if the majority population is ignored, “something explosive” could happen.
