New Delhi, 20th Jan. As the Delhi assembly elections approach, Congress has unveiled its list of star campaigners, signaling an aggressive push to reclaim its foothold in the capital. Party Chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will spearhead the campaign alongside other prominent leaders.
Despite being part of the INDIA bloc, alliance partners Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will contest the elections independently. The rift between the two parties has deepened, with both engaging in frequent public spats, even as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) projects unity. BJP has declared candidates for 68 of the 70 seats, reserving Burari for Janata Dal (United)’s Shailendra Kumar and Deoli for Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas).
The Congress’ star campaigner list includes Ashok Gehlot, KC Venugopal, Sachin Pilot, Bhupendra Baghel, Deepender Singh Hooda, Pawan Khera, Kanhaiya Kumar, Alka Lamba, Sandeep Dikshit, and several others. Congress candidate Alka Lamba, who is contesting from Kalkaji, criticized both AAP and BJP for focusing on political mudslinging rather than addressing developmental issues. Highlighting challenges faced by homeless individuals, she accused the government of complicating their struggles.
Polling in Delhi is scheduled for February 5, with results to be declared on February 8. Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 years, has faced a steep decline in the last two assembly elections, failing to secure any seat. The AAP swept the 2020 polls with 62 seats, leaving the BJP with only eight.
With the Congress banking on high-profile campaigners and a promise to address developmental issues, the stage is set for a high-stakes electoral battle in the national capital.
