New Delhi, 18th Jan. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced plans to extend its free water and electricity schemes to renters in Delhi if re-elected. AAP chief and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made the announcement during a press conference on Saturday, emphasizing the need for inclusive benefits for renters, particularly those from the Purvanchali community.
“Renters should also get the benefit of free water and electricity, as they are residents of Delhi too. Many renters have told me they benefit from free bus rides, mohalla clinics, and hospitals but miss out on these subsidies,” Kejriwal stated.
He highlighted the financial strain on renters, often living in crowded accommodations, and pledged to address the gap if AAP forms the government after the upcoming assembly elections.
Additional Promises
Kejriwal also reiterated AAP’s commitment to education, announcing plans to provide free bus rides for male students and a 50% concession on metro fares. Currently, women in Delhi enjoy free travel on all DTC-operated buses.
Other promises include:
- Mahila Samman Yojana: ₹2,100 monthly support for women.
- Pujari Granthi Samman Yojana: ₹18,000 monthly honorarium for temple priests and Gurudwara granthis.
Election Timeline
Delhi’s single-phase voting is scheduled for February 5, with results to be declared on February 8.
If implemented, these schemes could further expand AAP’s welfare initiatives, which have been a cornerstone of its governance model.
