Kharagpur, 13th Jan. Shaon Malik, a third-year Electrical Engineering student at IIT-Kharagpur, was found dead in his hostel room on January 12, 2025. The discovery was made by his parents, who had arrived on campus after Shaon failed to respond to their calls.
According to an institute official, Shaon had spoken with his parents the previous night, and everything appeared normal. When repeated calls went unanswered, his parents, accompanied by institute staff, forcibly opened the door of his hostel room in the Azad Hall of Residence, where they found him hanging.
In a statement, IIT-Kharagpur expressed shock and grief, describing Malik as an academically gifted and dedicated student with a promising future in Electrical Engineering. “The campus community deeply mourns his loss and extends heartfelt condolences to his family and friends,” the statement said.
Campus security and medical teams were alerted immediately after the discovery, and a thorough police investigation is underway. A senior police officer confirmed that the post-mortem examination has been completed and was videographed.
The institute has initiated an internal probe to understand the circumstances leading to Shaon’s death and plans to take steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
