New Delhi, 10th Jan. After Jharkhand, the Janata Dal (United) [JDU] is planning to contest the Delhi Assembly elections in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). According to sources, discussions on seat-sharing between the two parties are underway, with JDU aiming for a larger share of seats compared to the previous elections.
In the last Delhi Assembly elections, JDU contested two seats—Burari and Sangam Vihar. However, this time, the party is pushing for 4-6 seats, focusing on constituencies with a significant presence of Bihari and Purvanchali voters. Key constituencies under consideration include Burari, Kirari, Sangam Vihar, Badarpur, Okhla, Dwarka, and Palam.
JDU believes securing these seats will help strengthen its appeal among Bihari and Purvanchali voters, who play a decisive role in several Delhi constituencies. In the 2020 elections, JDU’s candidates faced major defeats. In Burari, Shailendra Kumar of JDU secured 23.14% of votes but lost to AAP’s Sanjeev Jha, who garnered 62.81%. Similarly, in Sangam Vihar, JDU’s Shiv Charan Gupta received 32,823 votes but was defeated by AAP’s Dinesh Mohaniya, who received 75,345 votes.
The alliance, if finalized, could be a strategic move to counter AAP’s dominance in Delhi, with JDU aiming to leverage its connection with migrant communities to improve its performance.
