New Delhi, 10th Jan. As the Delhi Assembly elections draw near, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its campaign strategy by concentrating efforts on the city’s slum areas. Central Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to engage directly with slum leaders on January 11 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi. The meeting is expected to be attended by approximately 3,000 slum chiefs, marking a significant move in BJP’s election preparations.
Since June 2024, the BJP has launched an extensive slum campaign aimed at strengthening its foothold in these densely populated areas. Under this initiative, the party has reinstated 253 organizers across 1,000 booths, including 53 female organizers. Each organizer is tasked with overseeing every three booths to ensure a comprehensive understanding and resolution of local issues within the slums.
To bolster this initiative, the Delhi BJP has established a Slum Campaign Committee, directing state-level leaders to conduct regular visits to slum communities. This proactive approach is part of the party’s broader strategy to address the pressing concerns of slum residents, which include access to clean water, sanitation, and high electricity bills. BJP leaders have highlighted that residents often suffer from health problems due to accumulated garbage and contaminated water sources, exacerbating their already precarious living conditions.
Addressing the ongoing issues, Delhi BJP General Secretary and Slum Campaign Coordinator Vishnu Mittal emphasized the party’s commitment to improving the lives of slum dwellers. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Housing Scheme is providing permanent residences to slum residents, ensuring they have stable and secure homes,” Mittal stated. He further criticized the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for allegedly exploiting slum residents merely as a vote bank without addressing their fundamental problems. “AAP only uses slum residents to boost their vote count while ignoring their basic needs,” he accused.
Over the past four to five months, BJP leaders have been actively visiting slums, with some spending nights there to better understand and address the challenges faced by the community. This hands-on approach aims to build trust and demonstrate the party’s genuine concern for the welfare of slum inhabitants.
During his address at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas plenary session, Minister Shekhawat highlighted the importance of the Indian diaspora in shaping global perceptions of India, aligning with BJP’s broader narrative of development and international collaboration. This emphasis on inclusivity and progress is intended to resonate with voters across diverse demographics, including those in marginalized communities.
The upcoming meeting at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will see Amit Shah interacting directly with slum leaders, discussing their problems, and outlining the BJP’s plans to address their needs. This engagement is part of BJP’s strategy to attract slum voters and challenge the stronghold of AAP in Delhi.
With the Delhi Assembly elections set for February 5 and results expected on February 8, BJP’s focused approach on slum areas underscores the party’s determination to prioritize the issues of the urban poor and secure their support in the forthcoming elections.
