Rajouri, 7th Jan. Havaldar (Retd) Baldev Singh, a decorated war hero who participated in four wars against Pakistan, passed away on Monday in his hometown Naushera at the age of 93. The revered veteran died of natural causes, according to a defence spokesperson. His last rites will be conducted with full military honours later on Tuesday.

Born on September 27, 1931, in Naunihal village, Singh joined the Bal Sena Force at just 16, serving under Brigadier Usman during the 1947-48 battles of Naushera and Jhangar. The Bal Sena, a group of young boys, played a pivotal role as despatch runners during the critical moments of the conflict. Recognizing their bravery, then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru awarded them gramophones, watches, and the opportunity to enlist in the Army.

Singh formally joined the Army on November 14, 1950, serving the nation for nearly three decades. He was an active participant in the 1961, 1962, and 1965 wars and returned from retirement in 1971 to serve during the India-Pakistan war with the 11 JAT Battalion of the 25 Infantry Division.

Throughout his illustrious career, Singh received accolades from leaders including Nehru, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and former Vice-President Hamid Ansari. His exemplary service and unwavering dedication to the country remain a source of inspiration.

“Singh’s legacy is a testament to courage and patriotism,” the defence spokesperson said, adding that he will be remembered as a living legend deeply respected for his contribution to the nation.
