Belagavi, 3rd Jan. President Droupadi Murmu on Friday inaugurated the KLE Cancer Hospital in Belagavi, Karnataka. The state-of-the-art facility aims to provide comprehensive cancer care to patients, addressing both their physical and psychological needs.

In her address, the President highlighted the alarming global cancer statistics, noting that cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, with an estimated 20 million new cases and 9.7 million deaths in 2022 alone. In India, the incidence of cancer is about 100 cases per one lakh people, and studies suggest a 13% increase in cancer incidence by 2025 compared to 2020.

Emphasizing the importance of holistic care, President Murmu stressed that healthcare professionals play a vital role in offering compassion alongside medical treatment. She underscored that timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial, particularly for cancer, where delays—often due to ignorance or financial constraints—can be fatal.

The President also called for increased awareness about the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. She urged people to work together to build a healthcare system that is not only world-class but also equitable and patient-centric.

Additionally, President Murmu touched upon gender disparities in healthcare, noting that in some families, the health of men is prioritized over that of women, which often leads to delayed diagnosis and treatment for women. She urged households to encourage women to voice their health concerns and stressed the need for collective societal efforts to ensure timely healthcare for women, especially in the case of cancer.
