New Delhi, 28th Dec. The mortal remains of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh were brought to Delhi’s Nighambodh Ghat crematorium on Saturday morning for the last rites. The procession, which began from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters, reached the crematorium at around 11:30 a.m., marking the final farewell to one of India’s most revered leaders.
Hundreds of Congress workers, supporters, and leaders accompanied the flower-adorned vehicle carrying Dr. Singh’s body, chanting, “Manmohan Singh amar rahe” and “Jab tak suraj chand rahega, tab tak tera naam rahega”. Among those present were Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, who walked alongside Dr. Singh’s family during the procession.
At the AICC headquarters, where Dr. Singh’s mortal remains were kept for an hour, a stream of dignitaries and party leaders paid their final respects. His wife Gursharan Kaur and one of their daughters also laid wreaths on his body.
Government to Allocate Memorial Space
The Congress had earlier urged the government to ensure that Dr. Singh’s funeral site could serve as a memorial to honor his contributions. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Friday that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had assured Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge that a dedicated space would be allocated for a memorial to the late Prime Minister.
Seven-Day National Mourning
The Union Home Ministry has declared a seven-day period of national mourning in honor of Dr. Singh. During this time, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across the country.
A Legacy Remembered
Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday night, is remembered as the architect of India’s economic reforms and for his tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. His leadership and integrity continue to inspire millions, and his legacy will be preserved through the memorial dedicated to his memory.
