New Delhi, 26th Dec. Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92, passed away on Thursday due to age-related medical complications. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi confirmed his demise in a statement.
“With profound grief, we inform the demise of former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had a sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26 December 2024,” the AIIMS statement read.
“Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the medical emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi, at 8:06 pm. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 pm,” the statement added.
Dr. Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) from 2004 to 2014, had been battling health issues in recent months.
The former prime minister is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Singh, and three daughters.
Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, rushed to AIIMS upon hearing the news. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and MP Rahul Gandhi, who were attending the Congress Working Committee meeting in Belagavi, Karnataka, are en route to Delhi, according to sources.
Dr. Manmohan Singh’s illustrious career included a pivotal role as the finance minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. He was the architect of India’s 1991 economic reforms, which averted a financial crisis and set the stage for the country’s liberalization and economic growth.
Dr. Singh’s two terms as Prime Minister were marked by significant initiatives, including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), the Indo-US nuclear deal, and the Right to Information Act, among others.
As the nation mourns his demise, tributes pour in for the leader who was often referred to as the “silent reformer.” His contributions to India’s economic and political landscape will remain etched in the country’s history.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced shortly.
