New Delhi, 25th Dec. Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar took a dig at the Opposition over their notice to remove him from office. Referring to the notice submitted on December 10 by the INDIA alliance, Dhankhar likened it to a “rusty knife,” remarking that it was ill-prepared and lacked substance.
“Using a vegetable knife for bypass surgery is inappropriate, and this notice wasn’t even a proper knife—it was rusty and rushed,” Dhankhar said during an interaction with women journalists. The notice was later rejected by Deputy Chairman Harivansh.
Highlighting the lack of coherence in the notice, Dhankhar urged media professionals to examine its contents. “If you had read it, you wouldn’t have been able to sleep for days,” he remarked. He emphasized that constitutional offices should be assessed based on merit, dignity, and commitment to the Constitution, not political vendettas.
The Vice President expressed concern over orchestrated efforts to undermine constitutional institutions and harm national interests. “These attempts are encouraged by forces seeking to damage the country,” he cautioned.
On the broader issue of parliamentary debates, Dhankhar pointed out that both Houses have often made headlines for the wrong reasons. He called for media accountability, stating, “Media is the only bridge to the common public and must ensure transparency and responsibility.”
The Opposition’s motion to remove Dhankhar was seen as an unprecedented move, which he deemed an attempt to tarnish the integrity of the Vice President’s office, held for the first time by a tribal woman. He reiterated that democracy thrives on expression and dialogue, warning against efforts to degrade constitutional values.
