Patna, 23rd Dec. The controversy over the 70th Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination has escalated, with Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav accusing the commission of systemic corruption and malpractice. In a strongly worded letter to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Yadav outlined eight demands aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness in competitive examinations.

Alleging widespread irregularities in the December 13 exam, Yadav called the cancellation of the examination at the Bapu Examination Centre in Patna and its re-conduct at the same venue “an attempt to hide institutional flaws.” He further criticised BPSC for relying on private agencies instead of government employees to manage such a crucial recruitment process, questioning the credibility of the examination system.

Key Demands in Tejashwi’s Letter

  1. Independent Probe: A high-level judicial inquiry into corruption allegations and lapses in the 70th BPSC exam.
  2. Cancellation of Exam: Annul the entire 70th Preliminary Examination and hold a re-examination for all candidates.
  3. Ban on Private Agencies: Conduct future exams exclusively with government employees to maintain integrity.
  4. Accountability Mechanism: Establish systems to hold BPSC accountable for lapses and ensure merit-based selections.
  5. Compensation to Candidates: Provide remedies for candidates whose efforts were undermined by procedural flaws.
  6. Address Application Issues: Allow nearly 90,000 candidates, allegedly excluded due to inefficiencies, to participate in the re-examination.

Yadav alleged that private coaching institutes had managed to predict over 25% of the questions, suggesting possible leaks. He also pointed to irregularities at multiple exam centres beyond the Bapu Examination Centre, underscoring systemic issues.

“Thousands of candidates are protesting in extreme weather conditions, expressing frustration with the BPSC’s mishandling. The state government’s insensitive attitude towards these aggrieved students is unacceptable,” Yadav said in his letter.

Calling for immediate action, Yadav urged Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to cancel the preliminary exam, announce a re-examination with clear guidelines, and rebuild confidence among aspirants.

The BPSC has acknowledged lapses, but the Opposition leader’s claims have put immense pressure on the state government to act swiftly. This controversy has not only cast doubts on the integrity of Bihar’s recruitment processes but also sparked statewide protests by candidates demanding justice.
