New Delhi, 17th Dec. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow over the demise of renowned environmentalist and Padma Shri awardee Tulsi Gowda. The 86-year-old, celebrated for her lifelong commitment to afforestation and conservation, passed away in her native village in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district on Monday evening.
In a heartfelt message shared on X, the Prime Minister wrote:
“Deeply saddened by the passing of Smt. Tulsi Gowda Ji, a revered environmentalist from Karnataka and Padma Awardee. She dedicated her life to nurturing nature, planting thousands of saplings, and conserving our environment. She will remain a guiding light for environmental conservation. Her work will continue to inspire generations to protect our planet. Condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
Tulsi Gowda, fondly referred to as the “Encyclopaedia of Plants,” was recognized globally for her unparalleled knowledge of flora and her efforts in planting and nurturing thousands of trees. A member of the Halakki community, she was a recipient of numerous accolades, including the Indira Priyadarshini Vriksha Mitra award.
Her passing marks the loss of a stalwart in India’s environmental conservation movement, whose contributions will continue to inspire future generations.
