New Delhi, 13th Dec. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla led the nation in paying floral tributes to the martyrs of the 2001 Parliament attack on Friday. The solemn event, held outside the old Parliament building, now known as Samvidhan Sadan, commemorated the 23rd anniversary of the terror attack.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Home Minister Amit Shah, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also joined in the tribute ceremony, alongside several Union ministers and MPs.
The event included a salute, or “salami,” offered by CISF personnel, followed by a moment of silence to honor the memory of the victims. Until last year, the CRPF performed the ceremonial “salami shastra.”
Remembering the Sacrifice
The attack, carried out by five armed terrorists, was thwarted by the bravery of personnel from Parliament Security Service, CRPF, and Delhi Police. The terrorists were neutralized before they could enter the Parliament building.
The attack claimed the lives of six Delhi Police personnel, two Parliament Security Service members, a gardener, and a TV journalist. Leaders were seen interacting with the families of those who lost their lives, acknowledging their sacrifice.
