Ranchi, 10th Dec. JMM legislator Rabindra Nath Mahato was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the sixth Jharkhand Assembly on Tuesday. The election took place during the second day of the assembly’s four-day session.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren proposed Mahato’s name for the post, which was seconded by JMM MLA Mathura Prasad Mahato. Congratulating him, Soren hailed the ruling alliance’s unanimous decision to elect Rabindra Nath Mahato as the Speaker for the second consecutive term.
Mahato, a senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), retained the Nala assembly seat in the recent state elections, defeating BJP’s Madhav Chandra Mahato by a margin of 10,483 votes. He took the oath of office as a legislator alongside other members on Monday.
The JMM-led coalition secured a decisive victory in the November 23 assembly elections, winning 56 seats in the 81-member house, while the BJP-led NDA managed to claim 24 seats. This marks the alliance’s second consecutive term in power.
