Mumbai, 10th Dec. Mumbai witnessed a tragic BEST bus accident on SG Barve Marg in Kurla (West) on Monday night, leaving six dead and 43 injured. The bus veered off course, hitting pedestrians and vehicles, before halting in a residential society, Buddha Colony.
Accident Details
The incident occurred around 9:30 PM when the bus driver, Sanjay More, allegedly lost control. BEST stated that the “speed accelerated” unexpectedly, and mechanical faults are under investigation by motor vehicle inspectors.
Casualties and Injuries
- Six fatalities, with three reported on Monday and three confirmed later.
- Of the 49 injured, most were rushed to Bhabha Hospital, Kohinoor Hospital, and Habib Hospital.
- Four police personnel sustained injuries, all stable.
Government Response
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief and announced ₹5 lakh aid for the kin of the deceased. Medical expenses for the injured will be covered by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and BEST.
Investigations and Traffic Impact
- The driver has been detained and booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
- SG Barve Marg remains closed, disrupting 10 BEST bus routes.
- The electric bus, manufactured by Olectra Greentech and operated under a wet lease, is being examined for technical faults.
Authorities are working to provide assistance to victims and ensure traffic normalization in the affected areas.
