Jammu and Kashmir, 9th Dec. A major tragedy was averted in Jammu and Kashmir after security forces successfully detected and destroyed an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in a controlled blast. The device had been planted by terrorists along the Srinagar-Baramulla National Highway in the Palpora Pattan area of Baramulla District, with the intention of targeting security forces.
The IED was detected by the road opening party of the 29th Rashtriya Rifles (29RR), who promptly informed the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS). Upon investigation, some explosives were found, likely a pressure-triggered IED. The BDS initially defused the explosives before proceeding to destroy them in a controlled explosion, using sandbags to ensure safety.
As a precautionary measure, authorities temporarily closed the road to ensure no traffic was in the vicinity during the operation. Once the IED was safely destroyed, the road was cleared and reopened for traffic.
The Srinagar-Baramulla Highway is frequently used by security force convoys, and it is believed that the IED was planted with the intention of targeting these vehicles. However, the timely detection and swift action by security forces prevented what could have been a major tragedy.
