New Delhi, 9th Dec. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday commented on the alleged connections between Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and Hungarian-American businessman George Soros, calling the allegations “serious” and emphasizing that they are already in the public domain. Rijiju also urged citizens to remain united against forces working against India’s interests and stated that the government was open to discussion on the matter.
“The issue of George Soros was raised in Parliament,” Rijiju told reporters. “The report is in the public domain and there are serious allegations in it. Whoever the leader is from whichever party, I don’t want to name them. This Soros works against India,” he added.
He further appealed for national unity, saying, “I only appeal to remain united against anti-India elements. The government is always ready for a discussion.”
The Allegations and the BJP’s Stance
On December 8, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that Sonia Gandhi had ties to an organization funded by the George Soros Foundation, which reportedly supports the idea of Kashmir as an independent nation. The BJP’s claims have sparked controversy, with the party asserting that this link shows foreign influence in India’s internal affairs.
The ruling party took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express concerns about the influence of foreign entities on Indian politics, with the BJP suggesting that the association could have a significant impact on the nation’s internal issues.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey also expressed his intention to pose 10 questions to the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, in the Lok Sabha concerning the issue, claiming that the media portal Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), alongside Soros, was conspiring with the opposition to destabilize India’s economy and defame the Modi government.
BJP’s Allegations on Sonia Gandhi’s Ties to George Soros Foundation
The BJP has specifically pointed to Sonia Gandhi’s role as co-president of the Forum of Democratic Leaders in Asia Pacific (FDL-AP) Foundation, alleging that the foundation has ties to an organization supported by Soros’ financial backing. The FDL-AP Foundation, according to the BJP, has expressed views suggesting that Kashmir should be treated as a separate entity, a stance that the party argues undermines India’s territorial integrity.
The BJP further claims that Sonia Gandhi’s previous role as chairperson of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation strengthened the relationship between Indian organizations and foreign funding, particularly with the George Soros Foundation. They also highlighted Rahul Gandhi’s press conference on the Adani issue, which was live telecast by the George Soros-funded OCCRP. The BJP views this as further evidence of a strong and potentially harmful relationship between the Gandhi family and Soros-backed entities.
Additionally, the BJP noted that Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has publicly acknowledged Soros as an “old friend,” underscoring the party’s concerns about the nature of these associations.
Response from the Opposition
The BJP’s claims have been met with strong reactions, including a dismissal from the United States regarding the allegations that it is backing efforts to destabilize India. However, the BJP’s narrative continues to focus on what it describes as foreign interference in India’s political processes, particularly in the context of the opposition’s dealings with Soros-funded organizations. The allegations are expected to continue to be a topic of discussion in Indian political circles, with both the government and the opposition preparing for further debates and scrutiny.
